Cub Scouts at Cricket Holler, May 6, 2023

After a rainy day we were surprised that the sky actually cleared enough for us to conduct an outreach event for the cub scouts at Cricket Holler Boy Scout Camp. We viewed the sun, Venus, and Mars before sunset. The sun was very active showing several nice sunspot groups while the two planets looked gorgeous against the deepening blue of dusk. After sunset we added several bright and colorful stars to the mix plus a few colorful double stars and bright clusters. We had such a great time sharing the night sky with quite a mix of scouts (boys and girls), their parents, and scout leaders.

Chabad of Greater Dayton, December 3, 2022

We had a wonderful time tonight with the Chabad of Greater Dayton on Far Hills Avenue where we had several telescopes set up all around the grounds. The sky cooperated and we were able to share views of Saturn, Jupiter, the moon, Mars, the Andromeda Galaxy and the Pleiades with dozens of guests and their families. Our hosts were fantastic, and it was so much fun! Thanks to all!

WSUAC Stargaze, April 14, 2022

Our first club outreach since the end of 2019, and the beginnings of the COVID pandemic. Fortunately, the skies cooperated wonderfully last night; the spring weather has been such a challenge. We would like to thank the Wright State University Astronomy Club for inviting us to support their university event. The crowd was great, engaged, and curious. Hearing guests gasp and wonder at the Moon, Pleiades, Orion’s Nebula, Whirlpool Galaxy, and other objects was long lost music for our ears.

Wright Memorial Public Library, November 2, 2019

Representatives of the Miami Valley Astronomical Society and the Wright Memorial Public Library during the presentation of a new library loan telescope on Saturday, November 2, 2019. The telescope, a 4.5” Newtonian, was provided by the Astronomical League and modified specifically for the library loan program by MVAS member Jim Ventling. Jim has adapted several library loan telescopes for Greene County public libraries and this is the first library loan telescope in the Miami Valley that is available outside of Greene County. We hope that it helps to introduce the wonders of the night sky to everyone that borrows it!

Wright Memorial Library, June 10th, 2019

MVAS members hosting a public stargaze at the Wright Library in Oakwood on June 10th, 2019. Although it stayed light until fairly late our visitors enjoyed viewing the moon in the deepening twilight. Thanks to all that helped with this event!

Huber Heights, July 9, 2019

Twilight deepens at the start of a recent MVAS outreach event at the Eichelberger Amphitheater at The Heights on the evening of July 9, 2019. Many thanks to all who helped make this a wonderful stargaze!

John Bryan State Park, July 19, 2019

With the waxing gibbous moon rising above the trees MVAS members are setting up for a stargaze on the evening of July 13, 2019, at John Bryan State Park near Yellow Springs, Ohio.  The MVAS has been conducting these stargazes at the park for over 40 years. Many thanks to those who volunteer their time and support!
