November 2008 Gallery

This is the best of the images posted in November 2008. I though October was difficult to pick 5 images John Graham made it difficult. This month is dedicated to him. (Ok, he did almost all of the postings.) Please if you want your image to have a chance in the monthly gallery it must be posted here on the MVAS website. I can not use links to the images on another commercial web site. Link to personal website are ok. Please use the [img] tag to have them display in your post.

M77 - Spiral Galaxy in Cetus

Telescope: Meade LXD75 SN6 Camera: Meade DSI Pro II Filters: IDAS LPS-2, Meade LRGB Luminance: 30x60sec, saved as FITS RGB: 10x60sec, saved as FITS Guide scope: Meade DSX-90, DSI Pro, and Envisage Software: Envisage, Autostar Image Processing, Photoshop

This proved to be a challenging little galaxy to capture; the core is very bright, just short of saturating, while the arms are very faint requiring a lot of stretching to bring them up.

NGC891 - Edge-on Galaxy in Andromeda

Telescope: Meade LXD75 SN6
Camera: Meade DSI Pro II
Filters: IDAS LPS-2, Meade LRGB
Luminance: 50x60sec, saved as FITS
RGB: 15x60sec, saved as FITS
Guide scope: Meade DSX-90, DSI Pro, and Envisage
Software: Envisage, Autostar Image Processing, Photoshop

I’m curious to see if I can observe this galaxy visually. It strikes me as a large faint galaxy, though if the core is visible that migh provide enough visual cues to pick out the disk and dust lane.

Antares and the Milkyway in Scorpius

here are some more shots I took this past July.
Keep in mind these are all 2 minute to 4 minute exposures, from a fairly dark location, ISO 800.

My Modified Rebel XSI is awesome under dark skies!

M74 – Spiral Galaxy in Pisces

Telescope: Meade LXD75 SN6
Luminance: Meade DSI Pro, IDAS LPS-2, 80x60sec, saved as FITS
Color: Meade DSI, IDAS LPS-2 filter, 25x60sec, saved as FITS3P
Guide scope: Meade DSX-90, Envisage
Software: Envisage, Autostar Image Processing, Photoshop

This one proved a fair challenge; the core is nearly stellar but the arms have a very low surface brightness. This should make neat target under dark skies.
