2010 Alpha Aurigid Meteor Shower is underway!

2010 Alpha Aurigid Meteor Shower is underway!

Hi All,

It appears the Alpha Aurigid Meteor Shower has begun this morning. I captured a dozen or so coming out of Auriga this morning from 3am to 6am, despite the partly cloudy skies over Dayton, Ohio. This Meteor shower runs from the 24th August to Sept 6th, with the peak occurring the night of Sept. 1st to the 2nd.

The Alpha Aurigid meteor shower is caused by the dust & debris from Comet Kiess (circa 1911)

You can expect a (ZHR) Zenith Hourly Rate of about 10, with peaks about 30 per hour.

Pluto crosses Barnard 92 Dark Nebula

Hi ALL,

Last night I captured Pluto Crossing Barnard 92 Dark Nebula,

This passage made it much easier to pick out Pluto among the rich star field of M24 The Sagittarius Star Cloud!

I captured this image from my observatory in Yellow Springs, Ohio USA with my homemade 16” Newt. scope and a QHY8CCD single shot color camera.

The Exposure was 1 hour or 12 (5 minute subs) captured from 01:00am until 02:00 am E.S.T.

Comet McNaught C/2009 R1 with NGC891

Hi All,

IF you look Northeast at 4:15am until Dawn, look 15 to 20 degrees above the horizon you should see the bright Comet McNaught C/2009 R1, it is hovering around 6.5 magnitude right now...its is supposed to brighten as it gets closer to the sun by the end of the month.

I took a photo of it from JBSPO last night...see below or in the imaging forum

Its shows the comet passing NGC891 Edge on Spiral Galaxy!

Jupiter Missing South Belt

Recent daytime observations of the planet Jupiter failed to reveal the South
Belt and NASA's Spaceweather has a notation and a link about this today.
I was not sure that visibility was the problem, and now I am certain that it was
not.
