Solar Eclipse May 20, 2012 - Updated

Hi All,

The Solar Eclipse in Indianapolis, Indiana was almost washed out, we had thunder storms around 5pm and almost washed out my view, but cleared enough by 8:00pm to start capturing the first contact & partial phase around 8:24pm, unfortunately thick clouds killed most of the views, except for a few minutes when the clouds thinned enough, i was able to capture a couple of keepers! This is me watching it from up high to clear those dang trees! Thanks to my artist friends Lyn and her Hubby for watching my booth at the Art show while I went off to shoot these images!

80mm F6 University Optics Refractor, 2x Barlow, Solar Filter, Canon Rebel Xsi
ISO 400, 1/640 second exposure, remote triggered!

Best Regards,

Heh, heh, I tried to cheat. I used my PST to see if I could glimpse the moon approaching the sun before it set, but I didn't have a very good horizon and I didn't see any sign of the moon. I was fun trying though.

If 50 years of amateur astronomy and space exploration has taught me anything it is that the Earth is a very special place. It would be nice to protect it like it’s the only Earth we’re ever going to have.

yep, I thought about doing

yep,

I thought about doing this in H-Alpha too...but did not want to risk damage to my H-Alpha rig while traveling at shows.

It would have been cool to detect the Moon against some prominences before first contact!

Cool shot, John. You
